Privacy
We don't ask for your name or email, and we don't set cookies. When you check a car, we use the registration you enter only to fetch that car's MOT records.
Checking a car
Your browser sends the registration to our server, and our server asks DVSA's MOT History API for that car's records. The registration never goes in the web address.
Our server keeps the result in memory for up to 15 minutes, so checking the same car again doesn't ask DVSA twice. It's filed under a scrambled copy of the registration (a keyed hash), not the registration itself, and it isn't written to disk. After 15 minutes, or when the server restarts, it's gone.
Your browser keeps the result, and any boxes you tick, in this tab only, so it's still there if you refresh. It's cleared when you close the tab. We don't use your browser's long-term storage for it.
The logs of our checking service record that a check happened and how it went (for example, found or not found). They never record the registration.
Before we ask DVSA, Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person, not a program, is making the request. It runs in your browser, and Cloudflare's own privacy policy covers it.
Counting visits
We count page views with analytics tools that don't use cookies and don't build a profile of you. They record the page, the referring site, and your rough location and device type. For a car check, they record only the outcome (such as found or not found), never the registration.
Server records
Like any website, our hosting and our network provider (Cloudflare) process your IP address and browser details to deliver pages and block abuse.
Your rights
You can ask what we hold about you and ask us to delete it. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
