Used cars with the highest MOT pass rates, by age
Older vehicles fail more often, so each table compares cars of one age only: all first used in the same year and tested in 2025. An MOT pass rate is one signal, not a measure of breakdowns or repair costs.

Lowest pass rates for their age
The same tables from the other end: cars with the lowest first-time MOT pass rates among cars first used in the same year.
Lowest MOT pass rates by ageHow the tables work
- Each table compares cars first used in the same year, all at their 2025 MOT test. Ages are never mixed.
- The rate is the first-time pass rate: initial MOT tests passed with no repairs. Retests aren't counted.
- A car needs at least 2,000 tests from that first-use year. ± is the 95% margin of error (Wilson interval); the widest on this page is ±1.9 points.
- Cars that can't be told apart share a number, shown with "=". A car shares the number of the first car in its group when their 95% ranges overlap.
- "Against the average" compares with all class 4 vehicles first used in that year, including small vans.
- Vans, pick-ups and taxis are left out of the tables, as are people carriers that share a van's model name, such as the Citroen Berlingo.
- Cars that cover fewer miles tend to pass more often, so each row shows the median mileage at the test.
- An MOT checks safety and emissions on the day. A pass rate is one signal, not a measure of breakdowns, repair costs or how long a car lasts.

Questions
Which used cars have the highest MOT pass rates?
It depends on age, so we compare each age separately. The highest first-time pass rates in 2025 MOT tests were: cars first used in 2022, Lexus NX, Lexus RX, Porsche 911 and 3 others, too close to separate (94.4% to 95.5%); cars first used in 2020, Porsche Macan, Lexus UX, Honda CR-V and 4 others, too close to separate (91.3% to 92.7%); cars first used in 2018, the Porsche 911 (94.6%); cars first used in 2015, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Lexus IS, Lexus NX and 5 others, too close to separate (84.7% to 86.9%); cars first used in 2010, BMW X5, Lexus RX, Lexus IS and 5 others, too close to separate (72.9% to 75.8%).
Is an MOT pass rate the same as reliability?
No. An MOT checks safety and emissions on the day of the test. It doesn't record breakdowns, engine or gearbox faults, repair costs or how long a car lasts. Cars that cover fewer miles also tend to pass more often, which is why each row shows the median mileage.
Why isn't my car listed?
A car needs at least 2,000 initial MOT tests in 2025 from one first-use year, and each age shows only part of the table. Vans, pick-ups and taxis are left out. Many cars have their own page in our list of car models.
