Used car years to avoid? Below-average MOT years by model

367 models from 42 makes · 31,087,704 initial MOT tests in 2025 · DVSA data · For guidance only · How we count

Older vehicles fail more often, so each first-use year of a model is compared with all vehicles first used in the same year: the same-age average. A year is listed as below the same-age average only when its first-time pass rate is lower beyond the margin of error, meaning the whole 95% range (Wilson interval) sits below it. Above works the same way. Years that can't be told apart from average aren't listed here. Each model's page shows every year with its numbers.

An MOT pass rate is one signal and the individual car matters more than its model's average, so check that car's own MOT history for free and see how we count.
